Optical brighteners for the textile industry are organic compounds which have the characteristic of absorbing ultraviolet light in the spectrum and emitting it as visible light, improving the perception of whiteness: they are chosen based on the type of fiber to be used. The white color that we perceive is the reflection of sunlight; the more light is reflected, the greater the observed whiteness.
